Polar Night

December is Rovaniemi at its most magical. Christmas is in the air, Santa Claus Village is at its peak, and the city transforms into a twinkling winter wonderland. The polar night casts a soft blue glow across the snow-covered landscape, while the long dark hours create perfect conditions for Northern Lights hunting. It's the heart of Lapland's winter season, and the moment the rest of the world associates with Rovaniemi.

2.5 hours of daylight

Polar night territory. Most daytime comes as blue twilight, which is brighter than you'd expect and perfect for photography.

At 66.5° north, Rovaniemi sits right on the Arctic Circle, so daylight swings dramatically across the year. The arc on the left shows how much of a 24-hour day the sun is up during December.

What to pack for December

The absolute essentials for this month, rent what you don't want to bring.

  • Layer Up: A thermal base layer, a warm mid-layer like fleece, and a heavy, insulated outer layer.
  • Essential Accessories: A thick hat, scarf, insulated gloves, wool socks, and thermal boots.
  • Tip: The extreme cold requires extra attention, hand and foot warmers are highly recommended for any outdoor activity.

Need full Arctic gear? Rent a complete set (jacket, pants, boots, gloves) and skip the packing.

December, questions we hear

It's the most atmospheric, fully decorated, Christmas programming at its peak, and Santa himself is there daily. But it's also the busiest and most expensive month. Book accommodation and tours months in advance.

December has very long dark nights and strong aurora conditions, when skies are clear. The challenge is cloud cover, which is more common than in March or September. 3+ nights with a guided tour gives reasonable odds.

Daytime average is around -12°C, but cold snaps down to -25°C or colder happen most years. The polar night keeps temperatures stable, no big mid-day warming. Full Arctic gear is essential.

The sun doesn't rise above the horizon for most of December. You get 2–3 hours of blue 'civil twilight' around noon, enough to see by. It's magical, not oppressive, the low-angled light turns the snow blue and pink.

If this is a once-in-a-lifetime Christmas trip for families with small children, yes. If you're flexible, November or early January offers 80% of the experience at 50% of the price.
