Rovaniemi in Summer: What to See, What to Do and the Midnight Sun

Summer in Rovaniemi means midnight sun, green forests, and quieter trails. Here is what to do when the snow is gone and the sun never sets.

Most people picture Rovaniemi under snow, with the northern lights and Santa Claus. Summer is the season locals keep for themselves. From mid-May to early August the sun barely sets, the forests turn green, and the crowds thin out.

When Is the Midnight Sun?

In Rovaniemi the sun stays above the horizon around the clock from roughly 6 June to 7 July. For weeks on either side of that, the nights never get properly dark either, so you get usable daylight at any hour from mid-May into early August. Pack an eye mask if you are a light sleeper, because the light pours in at 2 AM.

Why Come in Summer

  • Midnight sun: Daylight around the clock lets you hike, paddle, or pick berries at midnight. Temperatures sit comfortably in the high teens and low twenties Celsius on a good day.
  • Nature at its peak: Rivers run high with meltwater, wildflowers bloom, and reindeer roam the forests. The air is warm and clean.
  • Fewer people and lower prices: Trails, cafes, and accommodation stay quiet and cheaper than in peak winter, so you get more space and a calmer pace.

What to Do

Summer here is less about sightseeing and more about living like a local for a few days:

  • Climb a hill at midnight. Trails like Ounasvaara near the centre, or Könkäänsaari and the longer routes further out, give you the midnight sun from the top.
  • Get on the water. Paddle a canoe or kayak on the calm Kemijoki and Ounasjoki rivers, or join a river cruise from the centre.
  • Pick berries and mushrooms. Blueberries, lingonberries, and ceps grow along forest trails. Finland's right to roam lets you forage freely on most land.
  • Fish the rivers and lakes. Grayling, pike, and perch are in reach, with a guide or a simple permit.
  • Visit a working reindeer farm. The herders are around in summer too, and the calves are out.
  • Cook over an open fire. Grill sausages in a lakeside kota after a late walk, the way locals spend a summer evening.

These run on Finnish tradition and the rhythm of the season, not on a stage built for tourists. Come in summer and you see the Lapland that locals love most.

What to Pack

Summer is mild, not hot. Bring layers for cool evenings, a light rain jacket, walking shoes, and insect repellent, since mosquitoes are out in force in the forest from late June. An eye mask helps you sleep through the bright nights.

Our Take

Winter is the season Rovaniemi is famous for, but summer is the one we look forward to ourselves. It is quieter, it costs less, and it is closer to what this place actually is.
