Flying to Rovaniemi
Most visitors fly to Rovaniemi either with direct flights or via Helsinki, Finland’s capital. There are a lot of direct flights to Rovaniemi available especially during winter but also increasingly year around.
Many airlines offer layovers in Helsinki, giving you the option to explore the capital before continuing your Arctic adventure. The flight from Helsinki to Rovaniemi takes about 1.5 hours. 

Flying to Helsinki & Taking the Train
Alternatively, you can fly into Helsinki and take a scenic overnight train to Rovaniemi. The journey takes around 8-12 hours, and the VR night train offers comfortable sleeping compartments. This can be a fantastic way to see the Finnish countryside and immerse yourself in a relaxing journey to the Arctic.

Getting from Rovaniemi Airport to the City Center
Rovaniemi Airport is just 8 km from the city center. You can easily catch the Airport Express Bus or book a taxi through Taxi Rovaniemi for a quick and comfortable ride into town.

Snow: Abundant snow, perfect for reindeer sleigh rides, husky safaris, and northern lights spotting.
Why Visit: Peak winter season with great chances to see the Northern Lights.
Clothing: Thermal layers, insulated boots, wool socks, and a winter coat. Don’t forget gloves, a scarf, and a hat!

February

Weather: Still cold but slightly warmer than January.
Snow: Deep snow continues, making it ideal for winter activities.
Why Visit: Fewer tourists compared to December, yet you’ll still experience the full magic of Lapland.
Clothing: Similar to January, but ensure you pack extra layers if you’re heading into the wilderness.

March

Weather: More daylight and warming temperatures, often ranging from -15°C to -5°C.
Snow: Snow remains but the days are longer, offering better conditions for snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and northern lights viewing.
Why Visit: March is a fantastic time for winter activities without the holiday crowds.

April

Weather: Spring starts to show, temperatures rise to around 0°C.
Snow: Melting snow, but still enough for snow sports and activities.

Clothing: Warmer clothing but lighter layers as daytime temperatures rise.

May

Weather: Temperatures range from 10°C to 20°C. The snow melts, and spring blooms begin.
Snow: Snow is usually gone by early to mid May.
What to Do: The landscape shifts to lush greenery, making it ideal for hiking and wildlife viewing. You can also witness the floods as the snow melts.
Clothing: Lightweight, layered clothing with a good waterproof jacket.

June

Weather: Temperatures range from 15°C to 20°C. The snow is gone, and summer is in full swing.
Snow: No snow left except on the shade sides of bigger fjells.
What to Do: Experience the midnight sun and explore Rovaniemi by water with kayaks the beautiful hiking areas.
Clothing: Lightweight, clothing with insect repellent. 

July
Weather: Warmest month, with average temperatures from 20-25°C.
What to do: Watersports, mountain biking and hiking are some of the most popular activities around Finnish people during summer. Not to forget swimming, saunas and lakeside cottages.
Clothing: Light clothing, but pack a jacket for cooler evenings. Mosquito repellent is a must for hikes.

August
Weather: Still a warm month, with average temperatures from 10-20°C.
What to do: Berry picking and longer hikes are especially popular during august. You can also enjoy some beautiful morning fogs if you manage to wake up for sunrise. Also the first Northern Lights might appear to the end of the month!
Clothing: Light layers are perfect, with a sweater or jacket for cooler evenings. 

September

Weather: Crisp and cool, with temperatures dropping to 5°C to 15°C.
What to Do: Autumn colors begin to paint the landscape, making it perfect for hikes. September is also a great month to witness the Northern Lights with less crowds.
Clothing: Layered clothing, including a good sweater and a light jacket.

October

Weather: Temperatures start to dip below freezing with average temperatures from 10°C to 0°C.
Snow: The first snow typically falls in late October.
What to Do: October is one of the best months to witness the Northern Lights. October also offers great chances to do some shorter hikes and enjoy traditional Finnish wilderness huts.
Clothing: Pack winter gear as Rovaniemi starts to freeze in preparation for winter.

November

Weather: Temperatures are usually below freezing with average temperatures from +5°C to -10°C.
Snow: We give November a good 80% chance to have snow. There might be some warmer days in between the month but usually the snow stays through out the month.
What to Do: November is the starting month of winter activities. If there´s snow you can enjoy husky and reindeer sleigh rides as well as ice fishing and snowmobiles. This is also a great month to visit the Santa Claus Village with less crowds than the peak season.
Clothing: Full on winter gear as Rovaniemi tends to be really cold already in November.

December

Weather: Festive and cold, with temperatures between -10°C and -20°C.
Snow: Plenty of snow, perfect for all Christmas activities including visits to Santa Claus Village and sleigh rides.
What to do: Perfect for all winter and Christmas activities. Our personal favorites include traditional saunas, snowmobiles and ice fishing.
Clothing: Full winter gear with thermal layers and accessories to protect against the cold.

High Season in Rovaniemi: When and Why

December is the highest season in Rovaniemi, as tourists flock to experience a magical Christmas in Lapland, visit Santa Claus, and take part in the many snow activities. However we personally like, both February and March which are excellent months to visit, offering plenty of snow, northern lights viewing, and fewer crowds. These months are ideal for families and adventure seekers who want to enjoy the pristine winter landscape.

How to Get Around in Rovaniemi

Rovaniemi is easy to navigate, whether you’re staying in the city or venturing into the wilderness.

Public Transportation
Buses are available to take you around the city, including to major tourist spots such as Santa Claus Village and even to the airport.

Tours
Most of the tours include transportation, making it easy to join the most popular activities like reindeer or husky sleigh rides or snowmobiling without needing your own vehicle.

Car Rentals
If you prefer more flexibility, renting a car is a great option. However, remember that driving in snowy conditions can be tricky. Roads can be slippery, so it’s important to drive carefully, especially when accelerating and braking. Winter tires are a must, and ensure you’re comfortable driving in icy conditions.

Taxis and Airport Buses
The Airport Express Bus runs between the airport and city center, and Taxi Rovaniemi offers reliable taxi services for quicker trips.
